"I will never own a rodent!" I said that each time my family asked if we could adopt a pet rat. Nope. No way, no how. But then, at Petsmart, we visited the Dumbo rats and oh my, were they ever darling. Big old ears, and the way they were so curious about us as we peered through the glass at them. The way they snuggled all in a bunch to nap. And only $13 each! Sigh. We came home with two and in no time I was in love with the two little girls. This one is Frances. She's eating a donut. Shhh... she thinks it's a donut but it's really a Cheerio. Frances and her sister Samantha gave us so much joy. I had no idea pet rats were so adorable and playful and loyal. In fact, they are like tiny little dogs. Really! They come running to the side of the cage to greet you when you come near. They act like you are the center of the universe. They love to play and sit in your lap. Frances loved her food. We'd hold out a Cheerio and she would SNATCH it out of our hand like she was starving to death. Her sister Sam would gingerly reach and gently take the Cheerio from our hand ever so politely. Boy were they opposites! I miss them both. I highly recommend them as pets if your children are a bit up in age so they won't step on them or play too roughly with them. We just treasured these little gifts from the Lord!
I drew this likeness of Frances using colored pencil on black paper. I have a black and white version too. You can see it here https://fineartamerica.com/featured/frances-eats-a-donut-black-and-white-donna-mibus.html?newartwork=true
