What in tarnation is that?? It's a Ghost crab! Ghost crabs litter Texas beaches and you are lucky if you ever see one since they tend to blend in with the sand. While their burrows are found in dry sand, ghost crabs breathe through gills like fish. They can stay on land for extended periods of time, but they have to live near water or they will dry out. These speedy fellows can run up to 10 mph and they can tunnel 3-4 feet into the sand. But the most amazing fact I think is that they hibernate during the winter, holding their breath for up to six weeks! They are able to do this because they store oxygen in special sacs near their gills.
I am participating in a 7 day Challenge with other artists here on FAA. The theme for the Challenge is to create a piece of artwork with a LIQUID in it, for seven straight days This Ghost crab painting, done in watercolors and ink, is my final piece.
